KEONJHAR: Eight persons from two families were killed and seven others sustained injuries after a minibus they were travelling in rammed into a parked truck from behind in Odisha‘s Keonjhar, early on Friday morning.
The accident took place on NH-20 near Balijodi under Ghatagaon police station.
Keonjhar SP Nitin Kushalkar said that members from two families were on the way to Ghatagaon from their native place in Ganjam district to offer puja at Maa Tarini shrine.
The deceased were identified as Mita Pradhan, her son Akash, daughter-in-law Lili. Similarly, members of another family who died were identified as Bayakhand Gauda, Madan Gauda, Mamina Gauda, Babina Gauda. Police were yet ascertain the name of another deceased member of the Gauda family.
The front section of the minibus sustained severe damage. The force of the accident was so intense that the bodies of the deceased and the injured were scattered along the road.
Incidentally, the tragic mishap occurred on first day of the Zero Fatality Week, a campaign launched by the Odisha transport department to curb road accident deaths.
Police have been specifically asked to adopt zero tolerance against drunk drivers and arrest them immediately during the week.
