MUMBAI: Former Mumbai Mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Datta Dalvi was arrested on Wednesday morning for allegedly using abusive language and making objectionable remarks against CM Eknath Shindeat a public meeting on Monday. Police said that Dalvi was arrested on Wednesday and was produced before the local court which sent him to judicial custody till December 12.Police official said that they registered an offence against Dalvi under Sections 153A(1)(a), 153B(1)(b), 153A(1)(c), 294, 504, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language; imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration; obscene acts and songs; and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.
According to the complaint, Dalvi allegedly used foul language against CM Shinde at a gathering of Sena’s (UBT) Konkan office-bearers. The Shinde faction filed a complaint with the police alleging that Dalvi made insulting statements about a person (CM Shinde) sitting on a constitutional post. Dalvi said that he was from on the words he used against CM Shinde and said that these were not abusive and were in fact used by actor playing the role of late Sena leader Anand Dighe, in his biopic Dharamveer which was released last year and
“I am a staunch Shiv Sainik of Balasaheb Thackeray. I am working under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray. I do not feel sorry for my statement. Because, I have worked with Anand Dighe. I have spoken the same word that Anand Dighe’s character used in the movie ‘Dharmaveer’,” Dalvi said.
Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and his brother MLA Sunil Raut also reached Bhandup police station and extended support to Dalvi. Raut said that the word used by Dalvi was not unparliamentary. “The entire police force stormed into his home and arrested him. Dalvi only expressed the public sentiment in the rally. An emperor of traitors’ hearts is sitting on the CM’s chair and calling himself the emperor of Hindu hearts, this is an insult of Veer Savarkar and Balasaheb Thackeray. So actually Eknath Shinde should be booked for this,” Raut said.
“The same word was used by Anand Dighe’s character also used the same word in the film Dharmaveer and it was not cut by the censor board. Why didn’t the government arrest the director and producer of the film?. Datta Dalvi only expressed public sentiment. All this has been done to divert attention from the issue of farmers affected by unseasonal rainfall, as the CM and DCMs are busy campaigning in other states. We support the statement made by Datta Dalvi,” Raut said. Dalvi was Mayor of Mumbai from 2005 to 2007 and was a Corporator in BMC for three successive terms.
MLA Sunil Raut said that Dalvi was arrested without giving any kind of notice. “Although we have faith in the judiciary, we do not have faith in the government. If we do not get a stay (on judicial custody) by Thursday, we will jam at LBS Road, the highway, all Police Stations in Northeast Mumbai. If Datta Dalvi does not come out, we will continue our street agitation. Our fight started from the day Uddhav Thackeray was brought down from the post of CM. This fight will continue. Remember, the government is not immortal. Tomorrow our government will come 100%. If a survey is conducted in Maharashtra, everyone wants Uddhav Thackeray to become the CM again. We will put all those who have troubled us in jail. Note that they will not receive a bail,” Sunil Raut said.
On Wednesday evening, there were reports that Dalvi’s car was vandalized. According to reports, four youths came and broke the windows of Datta Dalvi’s car. Uddhava faction MLA Sunil Raut said that they have got the names of the vandals, and they will give an answer accordingly in the next 24 hours.
