NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested the key accused and the alleged “mastermind” in the Parliament security breach incident, Lalit Jha.
A case has been registered against the accused under multiple relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The police have arrested five people so far in connection with the case, and a massive manhunt was launched to nab Jha.
At least 8 security personnel have also been suspended over the attack and the home affairs ministry has launched an inquiry into the matter.
The four accused — Manoranjan D, Sagar Sharma, Amol Shinde and Neelam Devi have told police that their objective behind the move was to highlight Manipur unrest, unemployment and farmers’ issues.
Four of them were produced before special judge for NIA cases Hardeep Kaur by the Delhi Police, who sought their custodial interrogation for 15 days. However, the court sent them to 7-day police custody.
In the court, the police accused the four of indulging in an act of terrorism and said they tried to incite fear.
In a major security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, two men — Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D — jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during the Zero Hour on Wednesday, released a yellow-coloured gas from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by the MPs.
Around the same time, two others, including a woman, raised slogans and released yellow smoke from canisters outside the Parliament premises.
